OD’s Investments Create Your Competitive Advantage

At Old Dominion Freight Line, our focus is delivering excellence across every stage of the shipping process. We believe in investing in our business because it ensures that we can deliver on our customers’ shipping promises.

Our investment is rooted in accessibility, transparency, and consistency for our customers. For us, that means infrastructure that minimizes friction to ensure on-time, in-full and consistent delivery; innovative digital tools to make the shipping process as accurate as possible; and accessible team members across all parts of our business to act as genuine business partners every step of the way.

At Old Dominion Freight Line, on-time, damage-free delivery is the expectation — not the goal. We’ve invested in processes that give you peace of mind with every shipment, every time. From the first call to final delivery, you can count on us to be your true partner in business.

Solutions for Your Business Needs

Solutions for Your Business Needs

The first step in supporting our partnership with your business is investing in infrastructure. We know how important it is for your business to run smoothly, and we’re committed to playing a successful part in that mission. Our OD Service Centers are well-positioned to effectively support businesses around the country, and our fleets are maintained to the highest standards with both efficiency and care of freight in mind.

Fleet Operations: Maintaining & Loading for Promises Delivered

To maintain optimal fleet performance, we take a proactive approach to maintenance and check each truck every 90 days or 50,000 miles, so your shipments always get where they need to be reliably. We perform annual multi-point inspections that cover the entire tractor — regularly checking trailers, axles, brakes and tires. Moreover, we replace approximately 10% of our fleet every year to ensure we have one of the youngest and best fleets on the road.

When loading our trucks, we employ cutting-edge technology to make sure that our density is right, the dimensions fit on the trailer, and the cargo is correctly packaged to minimize the chance of damage. In fact, we continually invest in load planning tools to optimize the network and refine our haul plan, creating shortened route times for customers.

All of this is possible because of the best-in-class training OD provides for our dock workers, drivers and local service center managers. Each of their roles successfully sets up the next stage of the shipping process — and their collaboration yields huge benefits. Our local service center managers have a deep knowledge of their customers’ packaging needs. If a service center manager feels that packaging is insufficient, they will reach out to their customers and suggest proactive, quick solutions on how to remedy the issues.

Strategic Route Planning, Shipping Efficiency and Drivers Who Care

Strategic Route Planning, Shipping Efficiency and Drivers Who Care

OD uses sophisticated inbound route planning to find the ideal routes to travel between our customers’ businesses. This attention to detail helps improve fuel economy, reduce transit times, and ensure we meet our customers’ delivery and pick-up service time requirements with the highest degree of accuracy.

Our nationwide network of Service Center locations creates a hub-and-spoke model that allows us to serve all U.S. geographies in a strategic and efficient manner. With our industry-leading geographic footprint, we can ensure your freight gets where it needs to be on-time.

This also guarantees our drivers work consistent pick-up and delivery routes, contributing to stable schedules and familiar relationships with our customers. Not only are OD drivers trained to treat your freight carefully, but they also have the expertise of knowing the right questions to ask at both pick-up and drop-off locations.

Each day, 95% of our drivers return to their homes and families. The benefits are full circle: Because we prioritize their well-being, they bring their best to the job every single day.

Enhancing Business Through Digitization

Enhancing Business Through Digitization

OD uses industry-leading digital tools to ensure the freight shipping and tracking processes run smoothly, establishing greater transparency and confidence as your freight moves from point A to point B.

We’ve invested in digital infrastructure, like dockyard management systems, dimensioners, and route-planning technology to accurately collect and share information across systems. This improves communication and provides increased efficiency, accessibility, and consistency across our business, so you know exactly when your shipments will be delivered.

One specific area where we continuously work to enhance digitization features for varied customers is through API integrations. We’re making significant investments in updated API infrastructure — creating a seamless implementation for customers and allowing for greater insight into how their freight is moving.

No matter the size of your business or which tools you use, OD’s investment in digitization methods like API, EDI, and our odfl.com website allows us to work with your systems and do business the way you want to.

Digitization is being democratized and standardized across the industry. What sets Old Dominion apart is our constant exploration of new, more efficient technologies so we can help our customers as best as possible.

The People Behind Old Dominion Freight Line

The People Behind Old Dominion Freight Line

Exceptional shipping starts with exceptional people. Whether you work directly with your dedicated solutions specialist or call your local service center manager, OD staff members across the country are ready to meet your needs. The bottom line: We show up for you in whatever way is best for your business.

We know our people, processes, and training programs are integral to the success of our business and ensuring your business needs are met and your freight is delivered on-time and damage free. That’s why we foster an open and collaborative environment so people at all levels of the company can learn from each other, sparking innovative ideas and staying ahead of problems.

Accessible Excellence: 360-Degree Services

We take pride in knowing our customers trust that we are as accessible as we are consistent in our shipping practices. From everyday inquiries regarding pricing and tracking, to critical pick-up and deliveries – like Must Arrive By Date freight – customers have voted OD as their #1 National LTL Carrier for Quality in the annual Mastio & Company survey year after year for 16 years.

This trust would not be possible without our exceptional and uniquely dedicated team members across the business.

Local OD solution specialists work together with their national team members, with both parties being equally involved in growing their business. This dedication exists because we recognize our team members’ hard work and provide opportunities for them to learn and progress in their own careers.

With the exception of the Operational Regional Vice Presidents, the majority of OD’s senior leadership team is all co-located at our headquarters in Thomasville, North Carolina. Their proximity enables collaboration at the highest level and allows our team members across the business direct access to the expertise of our executive leaders. In fact, our senior leadership team works just footsteps away from our customer support team so they can offer real-time communication and immediate solutions for your business. This kind of cross-collaboration is central to our 360-degree approach to exceptional customer service.

Our expert team members aren’t just found at headquarters. OD has teams and systems in place at each of our service centers across the country, providing local hands-on expertise. From operations, to sales, to administration needs, when you call your local OD Service Center, you’ll easily reach an expert who will help respond to any need you may have.

The partnership our solutions specialists have with their customers is deep. They are there to guide customers and support them in making the best decisions for their individual business, truly serving as business partners.

A Commitment to Long-Term Success

A Commitment to Long-Term Success

Another key to our customer-centered culture is the care we put into our own employees’ success – as noted by Newsweek naming OD one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Culture, Belonging and Community. At OD, it’s been our goal to create a culture where people want to come to work and enjoy what they do. We strive to give our team members, at every level, the chance to expand their careers. This includes training our team members to get their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). On average, since 2020, 300 team members go through the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program annually, and currently 31% of our active drivers have completed the program.

We work to ensure that OD is a place where people want to stay and grow their careers. We believe in advancing our people, and on average, 66% of job opportunities are filled from within. It’s a point of pride to share that a significant portion of our staff has been with OD for over fifteen years.

The average tenure of our executive team is more than 20 years, and a quarter of our Regional Vice Presidents started their careers working on the dock. Their intimate knowledge of the business is critical to understanding customer needs to build proactive processes and products that eliminate friction points and quickly address potential customer issues.

We know that when you’re doing business, the stakes are high and there’s no room for error. That’s why we strive for a level of consistency that cannot be matched. With our industry-leading, 99% on-time delivery rate and 0.1% claims ratio, you can trust that OD won’t just move your freight. We are committed partners, helping deliver on the promises you’ve made to your own customers.
