Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. was recognized with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay℠ Excellence Award for the fifth consecutive year. The award distinguishes Old Dominion as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency.
Old Dominion joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership in 2009 in an effort to demonstrate the company’s commitment to environmental performance and freight efficiency. The LTL carrier has committed to many sustainable investments throughout the years in order to contribute to the EPA’s efforts, sharing the agency’s vision of moving materials, supplies and goods in ways that protect the environment, enhance our nation’s energy security and foster economic vitality.
“Since the partnership with the EPA began, we have put sustainability in action, not only through new trucks and custom-built tractors, but also through installing environmentally-friendly equipment,” said Greg Gantt, president and CEO, Old Dominion Freight Line. “Every step we make towards a more sustainable fleet shows our continued investment in providing premium service for our customers by reducing emissions and waste.”
Old Dominion will contribute to the SmartWay partnership program’s savings of 248.9 million barrels of oil, $33.4 billion in fuel costs and 119 million tons of air pollutants. That is the equivalent of the annual electricity used in 16 million homes. Old Dominion is one of 55 truck and multimodal carriers to receive this distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay’s 3,700 partners. The Excellence Awardees will be honored at the 2019 American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, Calif. on October 7, 2019.
“This year, the U.S. EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is recognizing 50 truck carriers and five multimodal carriers as recipients of the 2019 SmartWay Excellence Award,” said EPA’s director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Sarah Dunham. “These awardees are the top two percent of environmental performers among all of our SmartWay Partners. They are redefining best practices for freight transport by reducing fuel costs and improving the public health of the communities they serve.”
Developed jointly in early 2003 by EPA and Charter Partners represented by industry stakeholders, environmental groups, American Trucking Associations, and Business for Social Responsibility, this innovative program provides tools and approaches to track and reduce emissions and fuel use. The partnership has over 3,000 partners including shippers, logistics companies, truck, rail, barge, and multimodal carriers.
