Old Dominion Ships Historic Lifeboat to the SmithsonianCONTACT:
Thomasville, NC (June 29, 2010) - The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company donated the historic lifeboat of the “Spirit of Akron” Airship to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. OD was proud to be the logistics partner of this important shipment to Washington DC in early June. This lifeboat was a part of one of the first airships (Airship America 1910 and Airship Akron 1912), doubling as a kitchen, pantry, dispensary, smoking lounge and radio position, that attempted to cross the Atlantic on these two different occasions. Besides being part of the first two airships, the other historical significance was the first wireless message from a powered aircraft was sent from the radio position in the lifeboat via a Marconi Device. The lifeboat has spent the past 98 years in storage at Goodyear’s Wingfoot Lake airship facility. For more information on the historic Akron lifeboat, visit the Smithsonian's web site.
