Two Months Before

  • Choose a "moving date". This is when you would like the Old Dominion trailer to arrive at your home. Ideally, allow three days before you need to arrive at your new destination.
  • Survey your belongings to determine how much truck space you will need.

Inventory your belongings, separating them into categories:

  • Pack in Old Dominion truck

Six Weeks Before

  • Plan for your Old Dominion trailer's arrival by contacting your property manager or local officials to secure a parking space for the 28-foot trailer.
  • Request copies of important documents from your doctor, dentist, veterinarian, financial advisor, insurance agent, lawyer and children's schools.
  • Make travel plans to your new residence.

One Month Before

Reserve your Old Dominion trailer. Purchase moving supplies. We recommend:

  • Boxes
  • Packing tape
  • A moving dolly---preferably, one with straps
  • Scissors
  • Furniture pads
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Tool kit

Fill out a change of address form with the USPS , IRS and any other important businesses.

Notify your friends, family and colleagues of your new address.

Contact utility companies to have your services changed. We recommend having services disconnected at your old residence the day after you move, and re-connected at your new residence the day before you arrive.

Three Weeks Before

Reserve the freight elevator in your building for your moving date.

Two Weeks Before

Keep packing!

Dispose of items that you cannot move, like propane tanks and gas containers. See a full list of non-movable items here.

Make moving arrangements for your plants and pets.

Make moving arrangements for specialty and heavy items, such as cars, motorcycles, pianos and large recreational equipment.

Recruit your friends and family to help you pack the Old Dominion trailer on your moving date.

One Week Before

Contact your local Old Dominion service center to reserve a time to receive your Old Dominion trailer.

Disconnect any appliances that you will be moving.

Drain gas and oil from any power equipment that you will be moving.

Finish packing and organize your belongings.

Moving Day

Be present when your Old Dominion trailer arrives.

Show the driver where you would like the trailer parked and sign for delivery.

Measure the space you reserved on the trailer so you know how much you can use.

When finished, contact your local Old Dominion service center for trailer pick-up.

Determine an arrival date and time with your Old Dominion driver.

Make sure your Old Dominion driver has the address of your new residence and your contact information.

Track Your Move as it makes the journey to your new home.

Delivery Day

Ensure that the utilities are turned on at your new residence.

Be present when your Old Dominion trailer arrives.

Show the driver where you would like the trailer parked and sign for delivery.

Unload your belongings.

When you are finished, contact your local Old Dominion service center for trailer pick-up.
